Copy-paste chart dimensions

Keeping charts consistent in Excel is something actually difficult, because of 2 reasons:

  • When a column gets resized, the size of any chart overlapping this column will be changed.
  • Charts actually have 2 different size, one external (the size of the chart object) and one internal (the size of the Chart area). Excel does not provide any easy solution for keeping charts consistent both with the external and internal chart size.

This is why Power-user have this handy feature to copy and paste chart sizes, which will copy both the internal and the external chart size. This is very simple to use:

  • From the Excel ribbon of Power-user, click Copy chart dimensions to copy the internal and external dimensions of the selected chart.
  • Then select another chart and click Paste chart dimensions to apply the copied dimensions.

Equivalent in PowerPoint
The same feature also exists somehow in PowerPoint, using the Pipette feature. With the Pipette, you can copy and paste many things including object sizes. For charts, the Pipette will copy both the external and internal size.
