Cleaning data in Excel often involves a number of actions that, if performed manually, could easily take hours. The Power-user add-in includes a feature to remove custom characters, helping you easily clean your data.

To remove characters from an Excel range:

  • Select the range to clean
  • From the Power-user tab in Excel, click Remove characters
  • The below dialog box opens. Select the appropriate option:
    • Extra spaces: this will clean leading and trailing spaces, while also remove multiple spaces within your text. This can also be achieved using a TRIM() function.
    • Line breaks and non-printing characters: this will remove line breaks and non-printing characters from the selected range. This can also be achieved using a CLEAN() function.
    • Custom characters: specify custom characters that you would like to remove in the selected range. You can make this case sensitive or not using the checkbox just below.
  • Click OK to validate.
